Fur Trader |
During the 18th and early 19th centuries, the fur hunters set traps in the mountains and plains for the many fur-bearing animals who lived there. The Rendezvous was the gathering where the traders met and bargained for their furs to make their living. The "Colonel" pictured here represents the fur traders of the time.

Spring Roundup |
I have this picture of an old cowboy who used to come to Prescott, Arizona to the art show for years. He has such character in his face. I created this imaginary cattle round-up around his craggy face.

Old Soldier |
"The Colonel" was a great model for all of the artists at the workshop. He had the ability to assume almost any character he was asked to do. The Union jacket was really small on him but he seemed to own it. The story seemed to fit the expression in his face and body.

The Song Bird |
I wanted my granddaughter to model my great bustier, boa, top and bloomers that I brought home from Tombstone, Arizona one year. She couldn't stand the outfit, but I managed to get this cute expression anyway.

Rag Doll |
The winsome expression captivated me. I painted a portrait of this little girl and then felt the effect of her expression. When my mother was young in Missouri she told me that she used to stand in the road listening for any sound of other people because it was so lonesome. The "poke bonnet" and rag doll are mine. All of the scenery is part of
"painting a story".

Second Thoughts |
He is having second thoughts about the approaching horse, much less riding it. It's more fun just dressing like a cowboy with the big black hat.

Curtain Call |
SOLD!! She waits for the next curtain to be raised to take her bow. The long taffeta dress and elbow length gloves are so pretty and she is very elegant. I loved painting this from a tiny black and white photo in the Goodie's Ladies book of the 1900's.

Cool Drink |
SOLD!! In Texas everyone seems to want to grow up to be a Cowboy. Little Brandon who is four is about to take a ride on his own little paint horse that morning. I felt the impact of this simple act of a drink from the hose that fills the tub.

Lady of 1908 |
SOLD!! I have an old 1908 Goodies' Ladies book. Many of the grey and black pictures are fascinating. Painting the batiste, lace and marabou feathers on the hat were a challenge. White is a difficult non-color to paint. Notice the tiny corseted waist. I styled her hair and enjoyed her expression.

Sunday Dress |
SOLD!! Dressed in elegant splendor with her hat, gloves and parasol, she is ready to go to church. I love this 19th century style of dress. Boy, it must have been uncomfortable!
